Now, I’m not invincible. So, there are no names and no links. Just got to take my word for it…. these stuffs are actually said in the forum. Did I hear the word coward? Yep, that’s me. Being a newbie in PPP I don’t want to start stepping on toes offending people, but then I have the dilemma of being a blogger by instincts. So, I’m bound to do stupid things… like writing out my 2 cents here. Please understand this is going to be one of those ambiguous post. Frustrating to read but then a necessity in my interest to save my own ass and at the same time savour the satisfaction of bitching it a bit.
Here goes
There’s some Tom Cruises of Bloggywood out there who think they’re paid peanuts for the ops. Hey, they’re the Tom Cruises, meaning they’re the A-list. Those damn directors are paying A-list people way too low. Afterall, they’re in the A-list, that has to count for something right? The solution among the Tom Cruises it seemed, was to decline all the low offers. Everyone in the A-list applauded. Wow, what an ingenious idea. End of story? You wish….
Then one observant Tom Cruise said, “damn, that won’t work either.” Why? It seems the B-list, C-list and god forbid X-list will no doubt takeup the offers. These are the desperados. The Jet Lis and Jacky Chans of the 3rd World will no doubt not hesitate to take up these ops. Afterall, hail the mighty US and its strong exchange rate, USD 5 is substantial in these 3rd world countries.
Tom Cruises of the forum then suggested why the heck the agency is not more stringent with its choice of actors? Death to these greedy B, C-list people. Hey, these people can’t even act let alone speak English so what business do they have competing for parts in Bloggywood? Damn, it’s these people that’s giving the agency a bad name. More importantly, screw up their lucrative paycheck.
Now, that’s the end of narration and the beginning of some serious dissection. What’s wrong with this picture? I, personally came up with 2.
Firstly, the assumption the B-list and C-list are lousy actors. Now, I do agree the agency should be more stringent with its selection. No doubt. People who can’t act should not be listed in the agency. People meaning with no regards to geographical affluence put into the equation. No discrimination. Lousy actors from the four corners of the world included. Nothing to do with B-list or C-list. No movie can do with one actor. Even Tom.
Secondly, it’s the obvious, these people are no Tom Cruise. Sorry, there’s no other way to break the truth gently, but then I doubt anyone will die hearing it either. There is good reason why directors pay Tom outrageous amount to court him. Tom is a box-office guarantee. Tom has something the movie can ride on…. his popularity. It is a fair exchange. Tom has something the director wants and he can do with more money. I can play any part for Spielberg free, but I doubt he’ll take me up on the offer. So, I guess Tom won’t fret nor bitch worrying some 3rd world actor is going to undercut him. Tom knows he’s worth the price.
Now, back to the real world, the truth is, it doesn’t matter if you think you’re A-list and worth much more. The people paying you has to think that too. If you think A-list should not settle for USD5, then don’t compromise. Don’t take it. Having said that, don’t be mean to other folks who do. Advertisers are not blind. If they need you A-listers bad enough, they’ll see your direct badge and come to you. If they don’t and settle for the B-list or C-list, it just shows one thing….. you’re expandable. You don’t matter. Ouch.
Now, don’t blame others…. yeah, I know it’s always easier that way. It’s just not healthy.
